The GMC bar is higher than the nurses' — 7.5 overall, 7.0 in every skill.
GMC registration requires IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each skill, and no Writing concession. Doctors clear Listening, Reading and Speaking comfortably — then lose months to a Writing band sitting at 6.5. There's no margin here: Writing has to reach 7.0.
What you need · UK GMC (IELTS Academic)
The GMC requires IELTS Academic with an overall score of 7.5 and a minimum of 7.0 in each of the four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — with no concession on any skill. Scores must usually come from a single sitting (limited combining of two sittings within six months is permitted under set conditions). OET grade B in each component is the alternative. Confirm the current requirement on the GMC website before you book.
Why Writing is the wall
- The GMC sets a higher bar than nursing — 7.5 overall and 7.0 in each, with no Writing concession anywhere.
- Writing is the skill that most often lands at 6.5 for otherwise fluent doctors, dragging the overall below 7.5.
- The examiner scores four separate criteria — Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy. A 6.5 means one of them is just short, and you need to know which.
- Every retake is another sitting fee and weeks of delay to your registration and your post.
If your clinical English is strong and Writing is the single skill holding you at 6.5, you're one criterion away from both the 7.0-per-skill floor and the 7.5 overall. That's a focused fix, not a fresh start.
The Band 7 Writing Playbook decodes the examiner's rubric, finds the criterion capping you at 6.5, and drills a repeatable Task 1 and Task 2 structure with a 14-day plan. Getting Writing to a clean 7.0 — the level the GMC demands — is exactly what it's built for.
Most candidates here are stuck on Writing. That 0.5 band is exactly what we're built to close.
Turn Writing 6.5 into 7.0 — and clear the GMC's 7.5 overall.

Questions
What IELTS scores does the GMC require?
IELTS Academic with an overall band of 7.5 and at least 7.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. There is no Writing concession — every skill must reach 7.0. Verify the current standard on the GMC website before booking.
Can I take OET instead of IELTS?
Yes. The GMC accepts OET at grade B in each of the four components as an alternative to IELTS. The Writing demand — clear, accurate, well-organised English — is comparable either way.
How is the GMC requirement different from the nurses' (NMC)?
The NMC accepts 6.5 in Writing and 7.0 in the other three skills. The GMC is stricter: 7.5 overall and 7.0 in every skill, with no Writing concession. The Writing band that satisfies the NMC will not meet the GMC.
Do I need the Full Kit, or just the Writing Playbook?
If Writing is your only gap and your other skills already sit at 7.0+, the $49 Writing Playbook is enough — and lifting Writing often also pulls the overall up to 7.5. The Full Kit adds Speaking, Listening and Reading guidance if a second skill is short.
